Just spent 2 hours on one of the nastiest interior jobs...

First of all, let me explain how this started. Just like all great horror stories, innocently enough. I went to go vacuum out my interior.

I started by pulling the seats, and discovering about $5 in quarters and random silver change. Score! I vacuumed all the carpet on the passenger side, and went to start on the driver's side. I take the mat out from the driver's side, and notice that my carpet is a little grey, from what appears to be the black rubbery underside of the mat wearing away, and dirtying the carpet. Crappy, I think to myself.

So I start to look at the carpet, and notice it's a little lumpy, and uneven. Upon further inspection, the carpet feels just ever-so-slightly damp. Hmmmm, not a good thing, methinks. So I stick my fingers under the carpet, through the cutout around the gas pedal. I pull them out, dirty, wet, and slightly slimy. My wife comes running out of the house, after she hears me yell "FUCK!" just about as loud as I can.

I pull up as much of the carpet on the driver's side as I can without dismantling the interior, and I not only see it, I smell it. The entire floorpan of my driver's side footwell, including most of the foam on the underside of the carpet, is SOAKING. No standing puddles, just very, VERY wet. This is not good. I start to panic, thinking it's coolant, gasoline, brake fluid, god knows what. I pull off a peice of the foam from the carpet, and squeeze it out into my hand. It's just water, but nasty, stinking, stagnant, under-the-sink water. Disgusting, but a relief.

So for the next 2 hours, I spend my time on my knees outside the car, with towels and a blow dryer, drying out the footwell of my car. I had to pull most of the foam off of the underside of the carpet, as it was slimy and pretty much crap from it being soaked for so long. I spend half the time gagging from the stench, but also relieved because I've figured out why my car smells like wet dog sometimes, and that I'm taking care of it. There's not so much padding under the carpet now, but with the floormat in you can't really tell. Eventually, I'm going to just replace the whole carpet, it's pretty stained.

I have no idea how the water got there, it sure as hell didn't get there and get that nasty in the 3 months I've owned it. I immediatley searched the floor for holes, rust, etc and found nothing, to my overwhelming relief. My best guess is that at some point, the window on the driver's side must have been left down while it was raining or someting, and a large amount of water ran down under the carpet. I contacted the previous owner, and he swears that for as long as he owned it, the only thing he ever spilled in there was a cup of coffee, and it didn't go through the floormat, which I believe, he's a good guy. So for the meantime, it's all dried out, and at some point I'll just have to find a good, used carpet to swap in.

Thank god it doesn't rain much here, under my passenger side seat it was a little damp after it rained. I think has something to do with the sunroof drain thingies clogging or something and not going out of the car.

you wont find rot in the floors that causes that.

try the firewall, that rots out and soaks your carpet.
        or sunroof drain.
or your drain tubes for the cowel are plugged.
        Below the radar...

The firewall is obvious enough to check, but I'm not familiar with where the sunroof drain is/runs to, or wher the cowel drain tubes are. Can you elaborate for me, Chris?

You should check the "elephant trunk" that runs from the firewall. It often gets full of crap and leaves and can backup. Usually on the passenger side but you should check it.

Well, I took it off to clean it out, and sure enough, it was all full of dirt and shit.

Now I can't get it back on...

This thing is seriously not going back on. If I push on it any harder, it's just going to break apart, it's pretty stiff and old.

Does anyone not have one on their car? Can I leave it off? It appears the only thing it does is direct water downward, and we don't get that much rain here. Average snowfall, but this car probably won't see snow.

front sunroof drains go to the rockers. checkfor any smashed drain holes. i had a e30 come into work with a smashed front drain hole in the front which caused the water to have to travel back down the rocker towards the rear of the car. when parked downhill, the water pooled up up front and slowly seeped through those little white clips which hold the wiring harness. opened up a drain, had good drainage once again, problem solved.

had the cowl drain cause me a leak in the front of my passenger footwell. while squishing it and dumping all the crap out, it broke off from being old and brittle. i now have about a 1/4th of it left, and with all the rain here in portland lately havent had any issues, so i think you'll be ok.

hope that helps you out some.

Are those sunroof drains on the underside of the rockers? Sorry, I'm just really bad a interpreting when people are describing something on the car, do you happen to have a pic? Also, where is the cowl drain?

Think water is bad? Try getting your carpet out when your heater core bursts. Needless to say, a new carpet will be going in :)

I have an extra dark grey carpet I'll prob be getting rid of at some point, PM me when you're ready. It's in the ES...

Also, I was nervous with all that coolant soaked into my carpet, but it turns out (duh) that coolant has anti corrosive properties, so it didn't hurt a thing.
