    Switching eta to i cluster

Im switching my motometer eta cluster for a euro motometer from an i. I was looking on fred's site and im getting real confused. The back of my clusters are white, so I have a black coding plug? I took the tach out and there is nothing there. Fred's site shows how to do an early cluster with a chip, but it seems very vauge.

Ive got these both apart now, so if someone can help me out thats great. Thanks

Euro cars appear to be slightly different in terms of backing colors and other things. For US, if your car is before 1/86 then it probably uses a black coding plug located directly behind the tach (there's a marking that says Codier Stecker on it). If there isn't a plug, the hole will be blocked off and the cluster uses a chip located in the lower front.

It's not too complicated, just keep whatever plug or chip you currently have in the car. AFAIK the tachs between chip and plug clusters are not interchangeable, or I don't know of anyone who has done so.

hmm.. this must be why im confused. Both my clusters have that codier stecker on the back but there is a white bar that goes across. I guess this means that i have the chip. So is it the chip that plugs into the si board?

Well, I finally got the car started yesterday and was able to check the tach. Apparantly I didnt figure anything out. My car now revs to 7 grand!! haha. So who has done this. I took the tachs out and both go in the same way. There is a black connector that slides onto the circuit board, but to switch these would require me to switch the boards on the tach. I'm not sure what else to do. The entire plastic back on my cluster is white. Both my eta and the euro 'i' tach I have are the same.

And as mentioned above the I see the codier stecker, but it is blocked off by a white bar, so im assuming there is no coding plug, but where is the coding chip? I thought it was the chip that plugs into the SI board so I switched those and didnt work.

        Thanks for any help.

DO NOT SWITCH THE CODING CHIP!! I said this in my original post. Keep your original one and everything should work out okay (theoretically).
