    Carpet paint/dye

ok, so I got duplicolor at what we call "Canadian Tire" store. I bought the Desert tan color; I decided I didn't want to go black and since it is pearl beige I am hoping it could it hide the discoloration by blending.

Does this paint wear off after some use? I'm just experimenting, as I do have a replacement anthracite carpet.

I know the carpet gets stiff after a few coats and it was recommended to use a carpet brush to brush it out to soften before the next coat. I then vacuumed it and applied the next one.

Any advice would be greatly appreciate from someone who's done this application.

    thank you.

Well, it looks like it's coming along...But I wonder when you brush the carpet will it pull the paint from the fabric? This was my concern; if this happens, then I'm basically wasting paint..lol.

Update: so far I am satisfied with the results considering this portion was heavily soiled along where the carpet meets the floor line and the drive shaft tunnel.

      I think I have 5 coats.

I did 2 coats and didnt use a stiff enough brush to spread the fibers so after awhile mine started to look tan in spots. Just need to yard the carpet back out and redo it someday. I recommend coating it as much as possible

Brush while wet, the idea is to get it to penetrate the fibers better.

ah ok! that would make sense. I just didn't put two and two together. I was brushing it while dry and this did soften up the pile. But I suppose a wet brushing -dry cycle-and then a dry brushing couldn't hurt? I am basically done now. I wonder if I do another application and wet brush it will it help?

                thank you. :-)

Well, I finished the job; with the exception of a few rough spots needing to be brushed out. I am rather impressed with the quality of the product and how it turned out. here is a before and after shot. This was a heavily soiled carpet with rust stains, dirt and pink dye.

Looks great Ernie. I did mine black over the weekend and have to do some touchups.

                      You brushed it wet???

Yeah, I was totally thrown off; I had trim shops tell it would come out so so and not so soft. Honestly, it isn't quite as soft as original, but we are talking paint here. lol. I tried the wet brush method but it didn't seem to work for me using duplicolor spray baum. So I just went back to the paint/dry/brush sequence. after 7 cans and some elbow grease I am satisfied with the results. now I just have to source either a really nice matching set of door cards from a later model vert or get a set of black and dye the handles the same as the seats. or the other way around. undecided yet. I think tan cards with black pockets and handles would look smart.

                        thanks for the compliment.

I think you can if you go with a liquid application; I couldn't get the spray method to work brushing wet. It makes perfect sense since the paint can get deeper into the fiber. but for what it is, and the coverage I got, it's not all the way through but I think it will last a good long while before anything shows up. I think painting/dying when you have close colors makes it easier. Going from pearl beige to desert sand is easier then going from beige to black. Although darker I would think you'd see shading until you touched it up.

My car just got black door handles on the tan cards. I'll send a pic to you.

I used 4 cans already and think that it will take at least 2 more to get it, probably 3. I'm going to do the touchups with it in the car, so the carpet is at lease bent the right directions.

I think your set up looks smart Scott. Bmw didn't have it in their wisdom at the time to try two tone...lol. however, that leaves it up to us in a creative department.

Getting there, almost done; just need the right color combination for the panels.
