    325ix Center Console Question

I have a question regarding a switch found on the center console of a 1990 325ix. The question is contained in the photo below:

    Thanks.

rear window child lock, disables the buttons on the back door cards, but the 'master' buttons at the shifter still work.

press it to lock it, press it again to unlock it. Same idea as the Master window breaker on the other side, which completely shuts power to all windows and all switches front and rear.

So the button operates the same way as the window circuit breaker? When pressed, the button protrudes and doesn't allow the rear doors to be unlocked.

Yeah, you're right. I found the part number for the switch: 61-31-1-385-796

I guess when it's pressed the rear windows cannot be rolled down from switches located on the rear doors. Exactly what you said. This seems a little redundant considering that you can press the window circuit breaker to do the same thing, the only difference being that when activated no one can roll down any of the windows, including the driver.

I'm looking to make a central locking switch for my car. When I looked through the driver's side window the other day on a 1990 325ix and saw this switch, I thought It'd be the perfect candidate. I'm saying this cause I don't want to uses a $2 radio shack switch that looks out of place on the center console; not to mention it will probably break after using it a few times. The switch would function the same way as a central locking switch found a post-1995 E36.

its for child safety so kids couldnt climb/fall out the rear windows, Many new cars the back windows dont go down all the way for this same reason. Or some use it just to stop the kids from playing with the windows...lol.

If you dont have/plan to carry any young kids in the back seats you can easily delete it.
