    Sport Seat Modifications?

This may be a weird question, but has anyone attempted to modify sport seats? Here is why I ask....my E30 will most likely get prepped for some serious autocross competition in the SCCA STX class, so I am contemplating what to do about seats. Most will say "just get some Sparco/Momo/Corbeau/Cobra/Bride etc. race seats, but I like the way the OEM sport seats look, they recline, & they have decent support without being too restrictive on upper body movement (in autocross need to move a little more, some race seats restrict movement too much). The main drawback is weight...in STX seats & bracket assemblies have a 25 lb minimum weight, which means I would be giving up about 20+ lbs going with sport seats (I think I read somewhere the vinyl ones weigh about 37 lbs?).

So is there any way to take weight out of them without compromising the structure or safety? Has anyone one attempted this before? My car has comfort seats at this time, so I don't have a set of sports to look at right now, any ideas would be great!
