Covering rear deck w/ Mtech Fabric

Just swapped interior from tan to Black leather Recaro Lxf fronts and M3 rear seat. Grey carpet. Rear deck was tan carpet and I got a slab of Mtech fabric to recover. Anyone recommend contact glue or some other adhesive? I can't remove old carpet from fiber board underneath because it is glued on and will take up the top level of fiber which is a little beaten up on the rear edges. Thanks.

Luke swears by landau top adhesive:

He's told me he just uses a cheapo harbor freight gun to spray it, since it only comes in gallon size.

First, let me say I have done roughly 30 E30 rear decks. I do them in a nice, soft, stretchy carpet, just like BMW uses. I have a hunch that the MTech material is not very stretchy, so it is going to be an absolute bitch to get it nice and smooth, especially in the contours. The 3rd brake light of the late model will make it 50X worse, too.

That landau top adhesive that was posted is the best glue for this application...as long as it doesn't bleed through. Test it CAREFULLY, as in spray a 3" square piece, spray a chunk of hard material, let both sides dry for 7 minutes or so, bond them and wait 4 or 5 days to make sure it won't bleed through. That material is expensive and hard to get, you really don't want to make a mistake.

You can pull the carpet off, it takes only the thinnest outer layer of cardboard with it, just a "skin"...no big deal.

A couple of months ago my son and I were messing around trying to make a video, just so happens we filmed me doing a bit of rear deck upholstery:

Like I said, this was not even planned, we were just goofing around, but it might be useful to see the technique.

I would HIGHLY recommend you grab a spare rear deck to start with so you can practice, so you will know what you are doing. Or, better yet, make an insert panel that you can cover instead of doing the whole rear deck.

If you took a piece of 1/4" tempered hardboard, cut it to fit in the lower section of the rear deck (the inset area), cut out your speaker holes, etc, and made "studs" of tapered flat head screws, you could bolt the panel on after your upholstery work is done with no screws showing. Look through this bunch of pics to get a better idea of what I am talking about: http://s102.photobucket.com/albums/m...34%20Interior/

Personally, I think it would look way better than the entire rear deck done in that cloth, and you could make it match whatever you were doing with the seats.

              Good luck, hope that helps.

              Luke
