I know there is vinyl and leather but are there any fake leather seats out there? I ask because I have an OEM black leather vert seat and there is something strange with the "leather." It just doesn't look or feel right but I know it is factory material.

Mine are vinyl that look like leather and are not the dotted cheapy stuff. It's actually better than the leather for a cabrio, in my experience. I don't think it's OEM though, I believe it's aftermarket and I believe dealer options were either dotted vinyl or genuine leather so yours may be the same as mine.Das ist nicht nur nicht richtig, es ist nicht einmal falsch! -
i think the leather has a special urathane coating on the vert seats to help combat the UV exposure. at least this was the case with e46 upholstery in that the leather had an extra rubbery feel compared to noncabrio versionsComment

Yes, but most of us know or should know that "vinyl" is a reference to the perforated material and "leather" is leather. My cabrio, however, has aftermarket fake leather that looks and feels like leather. The only way to tell is by looking at the backing.
I don't know anyone who would or even could mistake BMW's vinyl for an imitation of leather. Perhaps a cheese grater.Das ist nicht nur nicht richtig, es ist nicht einmal falsch!Comment

Not all BMW vinyl was perforated.
And vinyl is VERY easy to spot regardless of how "good" it is.Comment

The very best nubuck or faux leather is still vinyl.
The 80s fake leather is easier to spot, also it ages and hardens to more plasticky than supple. When it was orignal Im sure it looked better.
The cabrio has real cow leather. moo.
The only cabrio with vinyl was the 318cs, and it was the same vinyl in the sedan , with vertical stitchesand The rarest back seat would be the318 ic vinyl back seat. Leather was an option.
However, I have noticed on the back seats of my 325 ic has some vinyl panels with leather. Not a urethane coating the top panels which often split are vinyl.
The door cards and etc are of course vinyl, unless you had the mtech 2 all leather option in which case they stitched leather on top of the vinyl.Last edited by stamar; 02-18-2012, 11:13 PM.
