I have a 91 318i with a bad rear driver's side window motor.
Can I replace just the motor with any year/model window motor?
No,
There are basically two types, a newer scissor type and a older link cable type. Motors are different between the two. I don't know what the cutoff is but my 86 is definitely the older link cable type. A 1990 e30 I saw and the junkyard definitely had the newer scissor type.
But before indicting the motor, check to make sure that there's power being applied to the motor with a meter when you press the button. Often times, it's the switch or even the wiring.
The repair of my front passenger side window resulted in a combination of a bad switch, a bad hot wire (broken somewhere between the door hinge), and a bad motor!
