    Replacing original soundproofing/damping

I have stripped my shell down to nothing and have removed all sound products originally on the shell to get it painted. When it comes back I want to do a better job than the original sound proofing/damping. I've read a few threads and looked at products and I'm none the wiser other than knowing I don't need to cover the whole car (a touring btw) with damping mats, just 25% coverage is enough.

Other than damping, is there room to add anything else under the carpet?

Since the dash is out I'd like to know what is a good replacement for the rubber thats behind the dash, I'm not sure if I'll be able to use mine again.

The more I read into it the more mixed opinions I read and the less I know whats the best route to go.

I'm in the process of putting down this product. Just stripped the interior and give it a good cleaning. It's pretty inexpensive.

Which products did you use? His site is a bit vague, doesn't really tell you the thickness of the products or how much of it you get.

I bought the basic kit, which should be plenty. I wouldn't worry too much about thickness, should work just fine. I would call the proprietor if you have questions...nice guy.

Where will you be using it? Would like to know if the carpet goes back ok for you as well.

          I had some time to do some reading and searching and have decided to more or less do the following;

Vibration damper - 25% coverage, I might do a little more as I have no dampening/proofing what so ever on the car.
Mass loaded vinyl - full coverage on the floor, firewall, trans tunnel, under rear seats, arches, etc
Closed cell foam - decoupling layer for the MLV and if it won't fit leave it out

I just don't know how much additional buildup of the above I can use before the carpet and trim won't fit any longer?

Should I use it on all the pillars behind all trim and will it even fit there?

And lastly, can the same principle for the floor be applied to the roof, I've got a touring so extra noise I guess, there's probably lots of room over the headliner? I'm not bonding the above but will have to do so for the roof, what product can withstand the temps the roof will experience?

We need to have StereoInstaller make a sticky with recommendations on what type of product to use, and where. There is so much unknown and random facts floating around with regards sound insulation it's easy to get lost in the information. If your goal is to block road noise I've heard that the most important areas are the rear wheel wells, and inside the doors or under the rear side glass if a 2door. The trans tunnel/floorboards and rear seat can use some improvement and the firewall is too much work for too little gain.

Beyond that I have heard recommendations for every product under the sun, and everyone has a strong opinion on what works and what doesn't. I'm sure StereoInstaller has answered this a million times before, so I will do a search and see if I can find anything.

^ Yes, and this topic has been covered in other threads. And yes, one can spend $150 (like me) or thousands of dollars. Depends on the goal of the OP.

There is to much information floating around!

I had a browse on here before my last post and pretty much found what I posted above or to just do full coverage, partial seems to be the best.

I'm not going for a competition spl setup, I have no sound proofing what so ever right now and I need something which will be an improvement over what comes standard in a touring.

I found this the other morning: http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=191351

I'll probably go the same route with the strips then closed cell foam and mass loaded vinyl.
