    Shift Knob Plastic Clip

Hey I did a quick search and couldn't find an answer anywhere.. So I have an e30 and I was trying to replace my worn out push-on shift knob with a new one I had handy. Except my new one is missing the plastic clip that connects it to the gear stick. I've taken off the original one a few times and it still clips on well. So my question is, is it possible to take the plastic connector out of the old shift knob and put it inside the new one? I don't want to break it without knowing what I'm doing, and I can't seem to get it to budge. Thanks in advance! My search only turned up how to remove the shift knob itself, I can't find anything on swapping the clip inside out! If it helps I don't mind destroying the original shift knob.

I think this a part of the assembly that is not supposed to come out.
You likely will need to look into some other solution. As a temporary measure you can use some hokey tape to raise the diameter of the shifting rod to match the one on the knob. Hardware store may have some plastic pipe that would have matching diameter.

I know you CAN take it out because the person who gave me the new shift knob had a few of the plastic connectors lying about his garage too, but he warned me that it's really easy to break if you don't do it right...

yeah if its an oem bmw shift knob you are not supposed to be able pull the retaining clip out that would completely defeat its point, to hold the shift knob on to the lever
