4 door sedan owners, Q about central locking

4-door sedan owners, what does the little square button/switch, just ahead of the left window switches supposed to do? This is on a 91 318i.

Mine doesn't seem to do anything, but it toggles like the window switch lock. I assumed this was the switch to lock/unlock the doors when in the car...like in my E36/E46/E84, but since it toggles on/off, I'm not sure...

    I have a 88 owner's manual but it doesn't address that button.

    Thanks.

It's a child lock to keep the rear window buttons from functioning.

Isn't that function covered by the rectangular circuit breaker button ahead of the right window switches? or does that one cut out all the windows... Why would there be two switches for the same function or what is the circuit breaker one used for???

One is for just the rear windows, the other is the master lock for all of them

OK thanks. so what is the rectangular circuit breaker one (also in the 2 door coupes) intended to be used for?

That's the main one. The small square one is the rear windows and the rectangle is the master lock for all of them

The rectangular one is also intended to be used as a circuit breaker, i.e. if one of the motors gets jammed or shorts it trips that instead of frying something.

Bingo, that's what I was looking for. Is that equivalent to a fuse that can be reset? Why ist there such a fancy set up for just the windows? What other BMW models had this funky thing? the rectangular one, obviously.

Neither of my back windows work.
Could it be something to do with this rectangular button?

                    1991 318i sedan of course..

I think the button was fairly universal, but not entirely so. Yes, if the circuit breaker "pops," it can be pushed back down to close the circuit again. The cause should be investigated first though obviously.

If just the rear windows aren't working, it isn't the big rectangular button. That would cause all the windows to stop working. You should check the smaller square button on the center console.
