The thing behind the door panels

So I recently pulled my passenger side door cards to diagnose a faulty central lock for the passenger side door.

In the process, I noticed that the piece that sits behind the door card (that cloth panel thing that has goop on the other side to stick to the actual door itself to seal it from the outside and Im guessing also for soundproofing.... I will call it the "thing") is so old that whenever I touch it, it seems to disintegrate in my fingers into a fine powder.

I want to pull all the door cards and replace these as well as put down a fresh track of that black tar goop stuff.

Where can I get replacement "thing" as well as a fresh tube of that tar goop stuff?

EDIT: This link calls it "foam covering"

that thing used to be foam. Not worth getting again. If you have no complaints about your current car's acoustic, then the existing vinyl is just fine layer. simply wipe that stuff off of it

What about aftermarket solutions to replace the "foam covering"?
Maybe something similar to dynamat but not so pricey?

Also, any info on the tar goop thing?

you can go to your local upholstery shop and ask if they can custom cut you 1/16 sheet of foam that you can possibly glue on top the vinyl blanket after cleaning off the existing foam. The gooey stuff is called buetyl tape. you can pick it up at home depot.

I assume your car is a late model. I swear BMW started skimping on the materials in their late model cars.

I was in the same situation, I reverted to the old insulation setup found in earlier models which, in absence of the "gooey stuff" and that vinyl blanket, was an adhesive film that covered all the openings on the inner door panel. For sound insulation, there was a cotton blanket that didn't disintegrate over time that went over it.

^ awesome. thanks for that information.
Yea mine is a late model. I am going to be taking apart the locking system for all four doors soon and wanted to address this foam issue.

I might just shop around local hardware stores and find some decent insulation paper or panels and make my own since i know where to get the "butyl tape" from now!
