    ITT: wooden shift knobs

Something I just tried out for the sake of doing. Used purpleheart wood, still hasn't sat long enough for the purple to come out.

I guess it goes pretty well with the engine choice.

Jeez, so much hate. Wiring's for the cutout, still haven't tucked that yet. I will admit it looks super dildoish in the pictures (and maybe just a little in person lol) but you've only got to move your hand like, 2 inches from the steering wheel to get to the shifter. Super convenient and easy to shift now.

Noone else has a homemade wood shifter to show off?

Holy crap that's one long ass shift knob (shaft?)

your friend did a pretty good job on that, kinda looks like one of those alpina shifters. very clean, needs more shine though. Any idea what kind of wood he used?

On a different note, got any other pics of your dash/gauge cluster? Looks like you covered yours in that 'fur/suede' that the rally guys use. Also, no speedo?

I'm in the process of turning an Alpina style knob out of tiger maple at school, I will post that up when it's done! I'm trying to think of a cool way to have my 5 speed pattern on the top, and was thinking about burning it in. Thoughts?
It's not bad paint, it's called "patina"

That'd probably look cool but I'd be too afraid of slipping or something and ruining the whole knob.

Eh I'm still throwing around a lot of ideas. I'm making a mock up with some scrap poplar first to get the shape just right. Like an Alpina knob, but a little taller.

Check out my build thread in my sig, most of your questions are answered somewhere in there!

My car came with a BMW wood knob and I loved it.

When I switched to the AKG shift lever, it uses a screw on knob instead of the click on style. My buddy said he could turn it no problem. One day we went into woodcraft (all the old dudes know him on a first name basis) and we bought a block of walnut I believe. My BMW knob doesn't have shine, so I asked him not to polish it as I don't like that look. He did rub a bit of black shoe polish on it to bring out the darker tones.

As for the cluster, I bought it on ebay with the title of a group A cluster. I have no way of verifying if it came out of a race car, but the gauges are dated back to '87 and the wiring looks just as old. Also I'm pretty sure that the use of carbon back then was pretty exotic, so I'm only guessing that it was used in a race car at sometime. It serves it's purpose well in my car, racecar history or not. No need for a speedo on track, and I rarely drive it on the street.

Dash has been flocked, and it's not worth the trouble if I had to do it again.

I got a nardi emblem off a Mazda steering wheel and made my own wooden shifter.
