can I drive with the gauge cluster out?

My 89 325i is having the typical dead SI battery issue, so I am going to pull the cluster out and go through it. However, I still need to drive the car back and forth to work.
I read somewhere that in late E30s you don't have to jump the connection to charge the alternator. Can anyone confirm this?

I have had to drive my old ones with out clusters all the time.
i do know that early e30s the alt light needs to complete the circuit to charge the battery but i only found this on a really early car my 325es went with out a cluster during my dash swap
also i think this may be in the wrong section,
