Rattling from my sunroof - making me crazy!

This has been making me nuts almost since I bought the car. There's a rattle coming from the roof of my car, and it sounds like it's coming straight from the sunroof. It does it when I go over bumps or dips in the road, and also when I shut the car off (when it shakes slightly). I've done everything but remove the sunroof panel from the car. There isn't anything loose, no hardware missing, and the sunroof itself is rock-solid.

The only culprit I've found that could be causing the noise is the separate part of the headliner in the interior, at the back of the panel, under the sunroof panel itself. If I kind of flick it against the sunroof panel, it makes a noise very similar to the one it makes when I'm going down the road. In an effort to try to solve the problem, I was thinking of gluing the headliner panel to the sunroof panel, but since it bends slightly when you pop it forward and up (which is the only thing I ever do), I'm unsure if securing it to the sunroof panel is a good idea. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Is the headliner panel supposed to be attached to the sunroof panel there at the back?

Take the sunroof panel headliner down, it just clips into place and take a look
to see what's going on in there, mine rattled before I replaced it with a new panel due to a missing bolt that I could only have seen if I took off the headliner.

I'll try that this weekend. I found out that it's not the headliner panel, because I tried driving while holding it away from the sunroof, and it still made the noise. I must find it!

            How's the panel itself? Rust?

I'll check, but I'm going to say no. I don't live in a rust-prone region, and there's not a FLECK of rust on this car anywhere. It's probably just something loose.

whilst tearing out my headliner, I found much debris: many pine needles, leaves, road gunk etc. stick a shop vac hose with a crevice tool in the space into an empty shop vac and see what gets sucked up
