    Removing a hack 'paint' job

I picked up a nice set of natural seats for the 'vert and shortly after i got them home i noticed that the color was not even. I scrubbed it lightly with leather cleaner and a toothbrush. The paint began to come off. I'm not sure what type was used but it not only made the leather feel like cardboard but also it prevented it from soaking up and leather treatment. After removing the paint, many flaws and cracks are much more visible. Frankly, i don't care. The seats are WAY softer and only getting better as i continue to apply treatment.

    Anyone else try anything similar?

Making seats that felt like cardboard and were un-maintainable due to an artificial coating more comfortable?

They just went through this discussion on an e30 M3 list and the answer was something called "Magic Eraser" followed by Leatherique. I'm looking for a set of sport seats suitable for reupholstery for LKQ type prices in Grand Rapids in the event you have old ones from the vert to part with.

                  Acetone, followed by new dye.

That said, seat paint will loosen up and smooth out with a little use.

You seem pretty sure of that, though.

This is why I can't stand all those "dye" kits. All they are is paint. If you aren't buffing off excess after application and re-sealing the leather after, it is paint, regardless of what it is called.

Works well for removing overspray on trim pieces as well.

I will try this! I'm definitely getting Leatherique as soon as i run out of the Chemical Guys treatment i have now.

I might have a set coming soon that are good candidates for reupholstering. I'l let you know if i do.
