I used the 23-149 batteries in my '89 325i with VDO cluster and everything is great. I imagine they would work for your applicaton as well. The local Radio Shack had them in stock. Pick up a soldering iron, solder, and desoldering braid while you're at it if you don't already have them.
What SI board battery do I need?

Someone mentioned jumping the board and someone mentioned charging the batteries. Anyone know what the procedure is for jumping the board? Can someone elaborate on how I need to charge the new batteries?Comment

I called RadioShack for those who are still interested in replacing the SI batteries themselves and the part number I was given that superceeds part numbers 23-191 and 23-149 is now 23-026. This is an 850mAH battery. They quoted me $14.99 each which I hope it not too high. Better than what BMW told me which is around $275 for the SI board including the batteries. I don't think they were interested in seeing only the batteries and it was all special order....of course.Comment

Ignore the RadioShack information I supplied. Those batteries were way off. They were 6 volt instead of 3 volt and they do not have the mounting tabs welded to the battery.
I ended up going with a Varta CR1/2AA which is a 3 volt battery with welded tabs, however you need the originals off the SI board since they have defined points on them that insert through the SI board. I took off the tabs off the old batteries (with caution because the batteries will spray and leak once you remove the spot weld), then soldered those tabs on the new battery tabs at a 45 degree angle. Things worked fine and SI board is back in.Comment
