    Removing The Stock Shift Knob

The life of my stock shift knob has come to an end.

It is missing bits of leather - I can see the wood beneath - it is now officially Fugly.

    I need to remove it.

    Tell me how.

      Pull straight up waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles. :D

If you sit in the back seat, put it into 2nd or 4th gear, and tug on it, you will be able to avoid smacking yourself in the face.

      Good luck.

Hrm... so it's just like any other BMW shift knob I've come across - you have to beat yourself in the face with it, as a price for removing it

So just peel the li'l plastic tabs back, with a screwdriver or something, and then yank on the bitch 'til it comes unglued?

Boy oh boy. This is gonna be fun....

It's not glued. Just grab the shift knob and pull straight up as hard as possible... or put it in 5th, and pull from the passenger's seat. It will pop right off.

I read somewhere, maybe a 2002 board that the wood underneath if varnished and lacquered and stuff makes a good wood shift know. That may have been on the older 2002 knobs though!

You should be able to twist and pull straight up. It's supposed to be that simple.
The shift knob was put on with some kind of adhesive in my 323..
I spent a couple of hours breaking the knob into a million pieces.
IF you CAN twist and pull it off, go that route.. and watch the face.
Those shift knobs can give a mean bloody nose! (I know from experience)

Turns out that if you get out your Dremel high-speed multi-tool, complete with cutting disc, and slice down the entire length of the shift knob, it comes off quite easily  ...

... and my replacement - [Secret] Cool New Aftermarket Shift Knob [/Secret] - ahhh - so much better!!

                  Thanks guys ;)

Ditto, except minus the bloody nose. I hit myself in the cheek.

Damn, I've never had a problem getting my shift knob off when want to. The problem is it coming off at the WRONG time.
Ever since I let Brew drive my car and he did a fast 1-2 shift and the knob literally flew off into the back seat, I've had to be careful not to do the same.
                      Brew - you're a bastard.

happend to me 2 times both were hilarious. one time was the first time i had ever givin a friend of mine a ride in the car. well when he got in the car and he reclined his seat back a tad but he didnt push the lever back down. so anyway, i took off in first and when i shifted to second my knob flew off and his seat flew back and almost tossed him into the back seat. so as im winding out second i slapped the knob back on and shifted to third while he was trying to get his seat back up. he was laughing the whooooole time.

                            fun times.
