My seat back - Seat just falls back

1 - If I try to adjust. Seat just falls back. How I fix this? They are vinyl sport seats.

2 - My driver side seat back is not attached. It seems maybe something is broken for proper attachment. How do I fix this? Ghetto way to attach it? Was thinking self taping screws into the metal sides might work...

    1) Most likely the reclining seat shocks are completely dead, but there may be another failure as well. I'd replace the two reclining shocks first and go from there.

The shocks (when removed) should be very stiff and not possible to compress with your hands if they are in good shape. Best place to get shocks? Probably these forums or the junk yard. They are usually available at 5-finger discount at the junk yard.

2.) The seat back is mainly held in place to the bottom half by two large screws attached to metal tabs. The metal tabs are prone to breaking so either they have broke or the screws are missing.

Here's an article on e30 seat repair you should check out.
PM me your email address and I'll send you another .pdf article on sport seat disassembly.

Is it #5 in THIS diagram? I'm thinking #5, "Gas pressurized spring backrest adjuster"

Awesome! Thank you for posting that diagram and link to that site because I've been looking for some of those part numbers and I couldn't find them on RealOEM.com

Yes, #5, the gas pressurized backrest adjuster, was what I was referring to in my previous post.

Checking on Pelican Parts it is pretty expensive new (around $40) so that might be something to get in used but good condition. Even though #5 and #4 are different part numbers I believe they are interchangeable. You may have better luck finding #4 shock in better condition at the junk yard since it gets less use.

PM me if you want some shocks or any other parts. I'm going to the junk yard to pick up some working mechanisms to fix my seats and I'd be happy to pick up any parts you need.

Todd, I appreciate the offer, but I'll likely buy new units for the rebuild. :)
