    Dyed my rear shelf…

I used one can of vinyl spray paint. The paint dried in 15 minutes and it seems to have done a great job; it came out very even and much darker. I sprayed about 1/3 of the shelf and then randomly rubbed a cloth over the surface in attempt to smear the black paint in ever dimension of the hairy fabric. The fabric feels the same as it did before I painted.

Under the rear deck I found tons of broken glass bits. I guess the rear window must have been broken in the past. This would explain why the headliner is messed up back there.

Thanks to Brian 89 325i for the tips.

EDIT: The paint is called U-Fix-it "Vinyl Colour" - Black

I will post a pic of it installed but that might not be for a while. I'm going to work on the headliner since none of the seats are in the car and this shelf is out. There is more room to work that way.

Where did you get this? I got some stealth items I want to do this to. I also need to do my carpets. Tan to black.

Walmart is where I got the stuff for mine in the auto paint section, Vinly and fabric color is what the stuff was called that I used on my rear deck, seat, and panels.

You guys know if they carry this in a gray color? My gray rear-shelf is now a really light gray, close to being white.

How much was a can of it? Was taking it out a hassle? I really want to change my interior from tan vinyl to grey cloth/black leather.

The stuff I got was $3 something a can. I only noticed black and tan. Taking out the rear self is pretty simple.

I have no intention of using this stuff, but is it durable? Does it ever flake or anything?

Ely, im not sure about that stuff you used on your carpet because i picked up the same exact stuff but in like tanish color and i sprayed a spare floormat and it didnt feel right afterwards its more like taking a can of spray paint and covering a carpet with it. :?

The can was ~ $5 CAD, I bought it at Canadian Tire. The paint doesn't flake; I ran a vacuum over it to check. I don't think it will flake since its' for vinyl and that would need to flex.
The rear shelf is easy to take out; you have to pop out the rear seats and then disconnect the speakers, rear brake light and unscrew the seat belt straps at the bottom.
I'm so happy with the results that I'm thinking of doing the floor carpet since everything is already out of the car. I'm guessing I could do it in 4 or 5 cans.

                        I'll let everyone know.

The stuff I used felt hard at first but then after a couple days it got soft. I did my carpet also but it hasn't held up well under the pedals but those are high wear spots. My carpet took about 6 cans I used 10 total for carpet, rear deck, rear seat, front kick panels, and rear panels.

so you can paint your door panels, headliner, carpets, and rear shelf w/ this stuff and it will look okay?

Headliner, I wouldn't be too sure of. People have tried dying their headliner before, and it didn't turn out all that great.

                              Anyone?
