taking out the carpet

Hey all,
I wasn't sure where to ask this but i think i am in the right place.(maybe :-P) Well i want to dye my carpet im thinking either charcoal or black. i am still researching and looking around for the best method. Its tan right now and i hear that some people did it and "it looked like ass" but thats not what i am asking. I was at first going to take the trim out and dye in inside the car but i have since found it my giht be better to take the carpet out of the car. so i my question for you guys is how do you take the carpet outside of the car. I understand taking the center console adn seats out first but what after that?
and if there is a thread about this please feel free to point me in the right direction :-D. anyway Thanks in Advanced everyone.

I am almost sure that you need to take the kick panels out also. Then cut the carpet as close as you can around the heater core. Unsnap the gas pedal and carefully pull over the pedal. I also wanted to dye the carpet black but every one I talked to in the carpet industry said that car carpet is synthetic and would not hold die and it would bleed onto any thing moist that came in contact with it.

wow is that a fact. i wonder the carpet is any different than other people who dyed it successfully. i better sit on this one a little longer before i commit then. thanks for the response it much appreciated.

I recently did just exactly what you are talking about.

First off, let me tell you that taking that carpet out is a fucking BITCH!

Just remove it my ass...I have pulled dozens of carpets in lots of different cars, this has to be one of the worst. The reason is that the padding is built on to the carpet, and in some places it is 4" thick!

Next up I pressure washed it. I used a normal home style $125 pressure washer. I used no soap at all, but whoever cleaned the carpet before left plenty behind, let me tell you, plenty. After letting it dry for three days (but I don't live in Escondildo) I bought 4 cans of VHT Carpet Dye and a nylon bristle scrub brush. I sprayed and then scrubbed the dye into the fibers. It was kind of messy, but not bad.

The finished product looks great. Nice clean, even coverage. It had been getting excess paint on my hands for a few weeks when I vacuumed or rubbed it, but the feel is almost like stock, the look is terrific and my damn carpet is now BLACK!

Who the hell said spray paint won't stick to carpet is seriously cracked.

I have not taken any pictures of the finished product. It is very hard to photograph! You can see it in the background of this shot:

I am thinking of dying it with the carpet in my car my carpet is that dirty and also for a living i clean carpet (well i do a lot more than that but that is one of the things i do for my company) i can take some cleaner from work and clean it. My plan is to get some RIT dye, not sure if powder form or liquid would be better) but get some Rit Dye mix it put it in a spray bottle take out my seats and center console and hit the carpet with the spray bottle and a nylon brush.

That's not going to work. RIT die is only made for cotton fabrics and won't color anything but cotton. Your best bet is to buy some carpet die in a can (Luke used VHT brand) and spray the whole thing that way.

Seconded on the "No RIT" thing. I tried a bit of it on my daughters GM carpet...no color change at all...plus, to make RIT work, it needs heat. How the hell are you gonna get an entire carpet to 150 degrees?

VHT is fairly cheap. I paid $6.00/can. The same quantity of paint in SEM, but non-aerosol was slightly more...I opted for rattle can just to save the hassle of cleaning a gun. SEM aerosol was significantly more, and frankly, I have not been so impressed with SEM as of late.

You won't believe how nice it comes out...go for it!

Silly answer? There is a small circlip behind the pedal (linkage pivot) and the base wherer the pedal pivots just snaps onto 2 or 3 studs in the floor.

I recommend that anyone who is serious about owning ANY car for an extended period and doing significant work to it buy a wrecked one and part it out...it is really odd how many little things like this some up that my parting a car a year ago help with.

But yeah, man...pulling the carpet is an absolute bitch. Hang in there, it's worth it.

I did this too last year, and my carpet is still super black after 1 year of beating. I use about 5 cans to cover my gray carpet. you can buy them in bulk of 6, its how they pacakge it. its like alittle over 30 shipped. Very good deal considering you need one can of backup anyways.

if you choose to cut around the heater box which 80% of people would, be careful not to sliced the train tube for the ac. Just look at it closely arond there and you will know. Its wedge in there.

If you think taking it out is a bitch... wait till you try to put it back in, hahaha now that is a total PITA esp when you are doing it by yourself.

I did it - but it was probably 105 that day in the garage. I never sweat so much in my life. LOL
