Front speaker kick panels (carpet vs. plastic) and door sill strip

So, since I got an early e30 I have carpeted front kick panels where the speakers mount along with the oem bmw speaker grills and 4 screws. The later e30 models come with the plastic covers instead of the carpet / speaker grill.

I just wasted about an hour trying to install the plastic covers in place of the carpet. Guess what, not exactly a direct fit. The carpet piece is "taller" and has more white synthetic padding behind it attached to the car body itself. You have to also detach the door sill and the door sill strips and I guess after it being there for 20+ years it was very brittle, ended up breaking into small pieces.. the white clips stayed in place attached to the car... are they supposed to be fitted to the door sill strip first or what's the procedure to install w/o breaking a new door sill strip ?

So basically, in a nutshell don't try this. I ended up installing the carpeted panel back.
