To the best of my knowledge, there have been 3 rear decks in coupes/sedans.

Late model, with the rear deck over the 3rd brakelight:

Late '86 through '88 with 3rd brakelight on top:

Earlier than that is the earlier style, with no 3rd brakelight at all, and the rear seat belts in the rear pillars.

I have 2 or the "middle" era rear deck waiting to be reupholstered (which I did the one on the top) that I would be willing to sell, with no evidence of ever having had a 3rd brakelight, with holes for rear speakers or not, or even modified to fit 6X9s if you want.

I just checked the rear self out of my 85 and it had the holes for the seat belts in it. But i think they sit a different way in it then the 86 and up cars with the 3rd light?

EDIT: nevermind, i see what they was talking about the belts and the pillers.

yeah...thats the one I have and I would like to delete the 3rd brake light.
let me know how much you would want for it. I have a dark gray carpet going into the car, and I will be installing a dark headliner, so I would like it to match.

going to the wrecker's tomorrow to see what I can find in the meanwhile. back in my MKII VW days, i installed an '86 Canadian model rear window without a 3rd brakelight and it looked so....clean.

oh, the things we spend our time contemplating..LOL

I just took it off and put a spare tweeter pod cover over it, ghetto but it looks ok. :)

I drove an m10 318is that did not have a 3rd brake light at all. Looked so clean I had to ask the customer about it. He said it came like that.

Thats because 1986 was the first year for new cars to come with a 3rd brake light as set by the DOT. And i think it was 1994 for trucks.

I used e30 m3 shelf...since my car didn't have any wiring for 3rd brake light. Original early e30 318 cars also didn't have the 3rd brake light but they were FLAT and ugly.

86 was the first year. It was required for 86 and later cars iirc.
