    Dyeing carpet darker?

I was wondering how many people have dyed their carpets? Since I'm getting ready to install my GTI Recaros, I'm going to be converting my interior to grey and black, and getting rid of all the tan. I've got a set of door panels lined up, so the last major thing I've have to do is the carpet. I was thinking it would be easier and probably cheaper to dye it, and I would also be able to more easily get the exact color I want.

So to those that have done it, what did you use? Also, what about wear? My car isn't a daily driver, and I'll be using floor mats. Also, there's rarely anyone in my car besides me, and if there is, it's just in the front, where there will also be a floor mat. My car sees very little foot traffic. So would dyeing be a viable option for the color change?

I went from light grey to charcoal. Used VHT spray. Wears well. I have pics somewhwere if you want to see them.

Switched to black interior and really like the "new" carpet.

Yeah, I'm going to try and get it a nice dark grey, going from tan. Did you pull the whole carpet out when you sprayed it?

If you could get me some pics, that would be great. Thanks!

I have a seen some carpets done in the past and have also seen the color come off on your shoes. I honestly think going from tan to dark grey will be very hard to do and make it look right and not rub off on to your shoes.

Surely funkypoo has some grey e30 carpet laying around that you could just swap in instead.

My thing is I'm trying to keep the cost down. Like I said above, I'm also going to be using floormats, and my car isn't a daily.

I made sure to brush the spray into the thread. I did remove the carpet from the car but it could be done without removal. The overspray/mist would probably stick to anything not covered.

I can get pics but will be out of town for the next couple of days.

Yeah, I would definitely take it out. I want to reinforce the area under the dead pedal, anyway.

I was thinking about brushing it into the carpet today, I would definitely do that to make sure I really got in down the base.

I bought dye from this place to clean up my cardinal red carpet. Haven't used it yet but is fairly cheap and seems easy to use being water-based, thought I would mention the website since they have the BMW colors - see the various color charts.

Josh, you have seen mine, right? I did it over a year ago, still looks fine, stopped rubbing off on my hands after about 3 months and a few vacuumings.

Still nice and nearly black, but 100000X better than it was.

                    kinda related:
Is it rediculously hard to remove the carpet?
I recognize that the middle console and the seats have to be removed (15 min), but is there anything else super involved in removing the carpet?
Can a carpet swap be done in an afternoon/lunch?
I have tan and am going to charcoal. (Can't remember how much I paid, but it wasn't more than $100, IIRC)

Once you remove the center console you still have to deal with the carpet being UNDER the heater /blower box. The hardest area is that, and behind/around the pedals.

Also figure you'll most likely break the door sills in removal, or will need new clips at the minimum.

Getting it out around the heater shit isn't that hard, you just have to make a couple of cuts with a utility knife in a few locations to get it out without removing all that shiz. It will make it a million times easier to get out, as well as back in, and it doesn't affect it in any way.

Right, my replacement is already cut in that way. I was just making sure that was the reason.

Sorry for the "delay" on pics. I have lost my old job and have started a new one. I am in the third week of orientation.

Meh, pull the heater box out, replace it w/o cutting ;)
