    Carpet in Folding Top Compartment

Did BMW install carpet in the folding top compartment like this?

The carpet has some nasty adhesive on the loop side of the carpet. The adhesive is ruining the plastic rear window when the top is stowed.

I can't find this carpet strip for the life of me on realoem.com.

Both my '89 and '91 have it. It appears to be factory installed.

use some goo-gone or goof-off or something and try and rub the troublesome adhesive away. if that fails maybe some black duct tape over the trouble area?

Don't use goof off on soft plastic.

Goof off damages the plastic window. Here's how I know:

My son attempted to remove a sticker from his iPod with Goof off and it damaged that plastic as well.

Since then I've gotten better advice from Larry Reynolds: Repeatedly dab P21S Total Auto Wash and blot until the adhesive is gone (no rubbing) with a microfiber cloth and follow up with Meguiar's Plastic Polish 10, 18, 17 (in that order) to get rid of the haze.

Still looking for a part number for the carpet! Anyone?

I thought about trying to get the adhesive off the loop side of the carpet, but I think it would be a futile attempt. Hey thanks for the reply.

Just an FYI - the gray carpet BMW used is pretty similar to the gray carpet used by Car Audio stores for covering speaker boxes - and another FYI - Pep Boys used to sell the same gray carpet in I think what was a 10ft roll...

You can strip off the old factory carpet from your vert's well, clean up any residual remnants w/ goo off or other product, dry - then use the old carpet as a template to cut from the new carpet you decide to purchase... Use the 3M "90" spray adhesive (which can be found at your local Home Depot, Lowes, WalMart or mom-pop hardware store), spray the well where the carpet will go and also spray the back of the new carpet. Lay the carpet down, press it firmly all over and let dry before using the well for top storage...

Like I said, that carpet is not "special" by any means and you could essentially replace it with the same type of product OR even replace it with something that is better (softer)...

                          :)
