    OEM heated seat wiring questions

    Hi,
I am almost about ready to start the installation of heated seat elements in my E30...just finishing up some things to make time...I do have a few questions though:

I am looking at the OEM wire harness and there are 4 wires to each seat:

    yellow, brown, red, red/yellow

    yellow, brown, black/yellow, black/red

since the heating elements are 2-temp (hot and hotter like OEM), and there are 2 wires for the back rest and 2 wires for the seat cushion on both sides.... how do I wire these 'effing things up?

    I am electrically inept. :(

Learn it. Live it. Love it.

No, but seriously what year car did they come out of? I would think you need a 12V in run/start and a ground for them to work.

Edit - Just looked at the diagram and you should have 2 wires coming out of the seat heater switch. A Green/Red (12V) and a Brown (Ground). They trace back to C302 (Accessory Connector) and then to Fuse 16.

I am just installing the elements in the existing seats, under the OEM upholstery.

There is one heating element for the backrest, one element for the seat cushion, and this applies for each side (pass and driver).

The wires I described above are what the OEM harness has going to each...4 wires to each side.

      Each element has 2 wires.

It all adds up, but I am concerned about wiring incorrectly and not having the hot and hotter, or burning something up.

I sort of see what you are saying. Do you have the switches on each side? I'd say they are a critical part of the install if you want things functioning properly.

Try downloading the 1991 318i ETM on the link I just posted, then check Page 28. It should have the heated seat diagram you're looking for.

Ok, I think this is what you want:

Seat bottom heater needs these wires connected:
        Red
        Red/Yellow

Seat back heater needs these wires connected:
        Yellow
        Brown

        Does this help at all?

Yes that does help a lot.
I did download the '5200-0 SEATS' page from your link, but was confused because I was looking at the element conector harness, not the OEM wire harness from the dash (if that makes any sense).

So, in short, YES! thank you for your help :)

Will post pictures as I do it in the 'daily driver thread'
