    E-39 HID Issues

    So, my friend has a 2001 e39 528i.

He is coming back from Army training on Wednesday.
And his wife took the car down south for the weekend, and while down there the light stopped functioning.

The low beam on the right side is out.
When the car turns on the light flickers for a second but does not stay on.
The car recently had to be jumped, due too sitting for an extended period of time.
The car has been outside for about 5 months, and has been rarely driven, also not covered.

I know very little about the HID systems, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would just like to make sure my friends car is in good working order for the weeks he gets to be home before he is off to serve.

    thanks for any input.

Full factory setup. Not sure on the bulbs. They were in there when he bought it.

Thats pretty common for e39's. Most likely needs a bulb. However it may need the control unit with igniter. Pull the bulb out, but dont touch it with your fingers. See if the bulb looks milky or discolored. If so, then try swapping the bulb from the headlight that is working correctly. If it works fine in RHS low beam then you need to replace the bulb.

So it still could be the bulb, even if the light flickers momentarily when the lights are first turned on.

It looks like it comes to full power for half a second twice, and then just stays off.

Mine did that. Replaced the bulbs, fixed the problem.

              awesome that's good to know.

Hopefully that's it. My friend is pretty low on money so the bulb would be the preferable thing.
