    auto dim map light mirror retro MUST SEE!

    well i just recently put an auto dim mirror in my winter jeep and i got to thinking that i would really like one in my e30...but i wanted one with a map light....well i happened across one the other day so i figured i try it out...and it looks great!

    *** here are the functions of the mirror ***

    * built in self contained home link
    * 3 LED map light with open door feature
    * compass
    * out side temp display with ICE warning
    * and auto dim feature

    the best part of this entire project was the out come. the display just happens to be the same amber color as our gauges and it looks very correct in the car....another awesome feature is there is a switched power, so when you open your door the mirror map light turns on with the over head lights........annnnnnnnnnnd they are very bright, a big plus. also there is the home link garage door opener that i have not tried yet, but im sure it works great.

    facing East: the "OC" is open circuit basically saying that the air temp sensor is not hooked up, should have that in next week

    3 LED map light

    button to very right is the map light button

    and here is the one i retro fit into my jeep cherokee, also has the same mount as the one in the pix above...so they are interchangeable

    temp

    ice warning

            Nice! It amazes me that people shell out ~$65 or so for an OE map light mirror when they want more light in the cave that is the E30 interior. I can see it for originality if you had an M3 or something, but the stock one sucks for that. It has no provision for a door trigger or anything. Even if you pop for a new one like this, its $81, with LED map lights, compass, outside temp, and auto dim. They are all over junkyards for much less too, I got mine for $2. No $20 bulbs either.

            Same way it was mounted in the donor vehicle, with a little metal button glued to the windshield. Make sure you get the location right though, that glue is strong stuff.

              It's simple. Maplight mirror provides more than enough light, and it's plug and play.

              If you look at the non iC cars, you'll realize that the rear view mirrors don't mount to the front windshield...so you are somewhat limited to what can fit on the stock rear view mirror base (the ball on the base is not always the same size).

                Correct, but the plug is (if memory serves) all the way down by the drivers side kick panel, behind the speaker. As far as plug and play goes, running one more wire to the same location (ie taking apart the exact same amount of stuff) would give light when the door is open on the compass mirrors vs OE. The OE mirror does give good light though, and "fits" better in the interior, design wise. The bulb thing does suck though, and I mainly wanted the compass and auto dim as opposed to more light. The auto-dim is great in a vert.

                Mirror base is a non-issue. You get the button from the donor car and glue it wherever you want the mirror. The iC cars mirror mount is useless too. It's a round button glued at the very top of the windshield.

                If originality was a concern, the OE mirror is a great upgrade over the base mirror. If not, why not get something a little better (and cheaper). Same reason I went 24v instead of a money pit built M20 again.

                  I think it's a pretty cool idea. I hate that the maplight mirrors don't have a door trigger, so this is pretty cool.

                      Junkyard is usually my choice. Cheap, and has everything you need.

                      Ebay also works. New they are kind of pricey.
