early to late model headlamp switch

while my dash was out my friend slammed the car door on my headlamp switch(early model inline plug). This pretty much destroyed it of course. I had no more early model switches around but i do have quite a stockpile of late model ones (2 row rounded edge plugs) has anyone ever swaped these out before it seemed fairly straight forward, but i cant get the interior , low beams ,or rear lights to work the fog lights and high beams do however and i was wondering if anyone has done/seen this done before. for the record there are 2 extra wires from the new plug an all yellow and red with black stripe. ive tried splicing them in to everywhere that makes sense but no luck

Man, I spent a few minutes looking at the diagram. What a pain in the butt!

I don't think there is an actual "switch diagram" anywhere...just like a "side marker" diagram that shows the switch, or the headlight diagram.

this is from the late model switch

the yellow is where the sliders have worn grooves
the white is to show where each pin ends up behind the connector
and the black is obviously where electricity cant run
(yes i used ms paint as it was very hard to see in the pic soooo no laughing)

as you can see they match up perfectly

so i compared the two plates and came up with this

                Late harness to early colors
                5-1
                12-2
                11-3
                2-8
                8-9
                7-10
                6-11
                1-12

actually this comes up to exact color matching which i didnt do in the first place because i could clearly see the foglight switch was wired in differently, but well try this combo tonight and see what happens.
