Curiousity about smileys

Whats with the smiley elipsoids i know that Matrix makes them and they have them on their site but a smiley?

Smiley ellipsoids are made by Bosch and Hella.

Depo also produces poorly made reproductions.

The smile lets out light that would otherwise be trapped behind the projector cutoff plate. I doubt it makes that much difference in the end, but it looks cool.
