What does the smiley add?

Just curious if anyone knows the reason why the smiley was added? Light output or just to make the car look happier? Really though, Im curious.

There are Euro Spec Ellips, which have the smillies. The Smillie lets more light come out from the housing (bulb is behind the globe projector and housing) and puts it on the ground just in front of the car. This is not in the regular beam pattern, isn't NEEDED, but makes the road in front of you brighter. Great for night time canyon runs, unless fog is an issue. These also have a built-in city light, which looks nice when wired up, although isn't needed for seeing at night. These run H1 bulbs in the low beam (projector) and high beam (standard refractor). This is THE best option for the e30, should be for the e21 as well, if modifications aren't too much of a bitch.
