Most likely your reverse light switch on the transmission.

On my car, E30M3, the reverse light switch is on the driver's side of the transmission. Reverse switches are a common fail item and fairly easy to replace.

Also, lift up the shifter boot and check the condition of the wires as they come up into the car. Originally they were routed through a hole in the shifter boot. Over the years they just get pushed around the metal edge and wear through or break.

If you have the time and inclination, make up a beefier wire harness. At the connector under the center console, splice in some 14g or 16g zip-cord and some crimp on quick disconnects. Right angle preferred. There should be some little metal tabs in the transmission tunnel to keep the wire out of harms way.
