Auto Adjuster/ Hydraulic Adjuster Clip for Smileys

EDIT: Part Number listed on 4th post

A piece broke off my smileys so now the low beam wiggles around. What exactly is it? I don't see wires, or plugs for wiring on them, but is it for a auto adjust system? Wiper set up? I can't find anything on real OEM, looks like I can fit a manual adjuster in its place. My current set has manual adjusts all around but here's pics of the set I have a question on.

Same problem as this guy here:

If anyone has that clip part number (its a different clip then the manual adjuster clips, those part numbers in that thread are incorrect) These are the best smileys Ive ever came across, rust free, no pitting on the glass. Would really like to repair them so any help would be appreciated!

It's part of the hydraulic auto-leveling system some cars had installed. Just remove the hydraulic adjuster and cup like you have and replace with a manual adjuster and the black plastic cup. It works fine; I did it to mine.

You can also use adjusters for US-spec ellipsoids.

Because e34 ellipsoids are a lot more common, do you know if I can use there adjusters? Anyone know of that clip part number so I wouldn't have to convert it?

Well for whatever reason I wasn't able to find ths on RealOEM, but after much research I did in fact find the clip part number. I'm sure this will help someone in the near feature, as the plastic is very brittle and will break easily. Your clip maybe black, but this white one should still work (there where 2 different color clips)

The main difference between the black and white clips is how far the adjuster ball slides into them. The white clip allows the ball to sit on top of it (you can see there are no catches on that to hold the ball), whereas the black clip holds the ball in place. As a result, the ball is inserted farther into the black clip. Shouldn't make a huge difference, but worth mentioning.

          White:

          Black:

You can also buy the whole adjuster (minus the clip) from most parts-supply places and the dealership. They're pricey though (around $10 EACH).

Also, for anything reading this. Don't order that black clip pictured above in post #5. It will set your adjustment too low, and your not able to adjust it by hand (because it's a hydraulic adjustment). Only order it IF your replacing the clip for your manual adjust headlight.

Ok so I just went to the dealer to order the clip. Apparently theirs only 1 left in stock Worldwide. I deal with this guy in the parts department pretty frequently, so I do in fact believe him. Looks like if this breaks on someone your going to have to convert to manual adjusters.

EDIT: It was BS and there NLA :(

Not to be contrary, but I do believe there's some manual adjustment in that hydraulic adjuster. It's been a long time, but I'm pretty sure that large black plastic piece with the grooves in it will turn the adjuster some. Otherwise, you're correct that the black cup will bring adjustment down for people using hydraulic adjustment.

Your right, it gives you a couple MM of adjustment. When I went to the dealer, the parts guy I deal with brought me out 3 of the other style clips you posted above, explained to him I needed the other style special for hydraulic adjusters, but now I learn there NLA. I might go back for those black clips he brought out and hope that couple MM of adjustment will be enough.

Honestly, just buy a new manual adjuster or get one out of an E30 or E34 at the junkyard. Only two things to look for are ability to turn them (rust) and making sure they aren't bent. Even if they're rusted solid, a dousing with aluminum cutting fluid will free them up; then just clean the threads, smear with grease, and run it back and forth a couple times.

I'd say this is the best route, thanks for the tip to remove rust on the threads.

No problem! Wire brush>scotchbrite>steel wool for rust removal, in my opinion. Clean periodically with brake clean or something similar until the surface of the threads is smooth. It's okay if it isn't shiny, the grease will (hopefully) keep any rust from worsening again and gumming up the threads.
