    My quest for great headlights.

Hello everyone. I'm a heavy lurker in this community and decided I'll actually contribute something.

I have the Hella H4 sealed beam conversions currently installed, but the low beams are leaving a lot to be desired. I ultimately said to myself, "Why not do an HID projector retrofit and make some magic happen?"

Here's my current list of parts I need to obtain:

    1) DDM Tuning's sealed beam conversion bowls - $30.00 (DDM)
    2) A custom made block-off plate - $0.00 (Made from scrap metal at a local fabrication shop.)
    3) FX-R projectors - $63 (DDM), $110 (TRS), $125 (Umnitza); I purchased the set from Umnitza in a bundle deal a couple years ago when I had my E46, but never installed them.
    4) 35W D2S HID kit - $44 (DDM), $160 (TRS)

Considering I already have the projectors, my grand total could be as low as $74.00 for this project.

"Okay... who is this guy and what does he really have planned?"

My first step is to purchase the sealed beam conversion bowls (duh). I'd then do a straight cut on the backside of the bowl to shorten them to the point where the lens of the projector is approximately 1 cm from the backside of the lens of the housing after mounting the block-off plate, like so:

I may or may not have to create a bracket to help support the projector... it all depends on the glue I intend to use to seal up where the projector slides into the block-off plate (as well as sealing up the block-off plate to the reflector housing).

My low beams are wired to stay on with the high beams, so I will be tapping the bi-xenon solenoids into the high beam wires so I can basically have the sun come out from the front of my car when I activate my high beams.

What do you all think of this plan? Doesn't seem too complicated and I'm surprised I haven't really seen it done here before.

This looks a lot simpler than retrofitting them into smileys. How will this compare to the bi-xenon h1 retrofit kits available?

The FX-R will blow it out of the water. Google pictures of the FX-R. It's one of the brightest projectors on the market.

I may have to change my design so more of the body of the projector is mounted to the metal plate to reduce strain on the contact point.

I guess I'll just have to play with it and see what works.

Due to my fiancee's car crapping out, this project got put on hold. No worries... OP will deliver soon enough...

            I'm well aware.

I'm taking a slightly different approach to this, though. Instead of using existing projector housings, I'm buying some cheap eBay housings with clear lenses and mounting the projectors in said housings using a custom adapter plate made from stainless steel. Due to the simplicity, it could be a viable option for other enthusiasts who don't want to get into machining or spending hundreds more than they need to.
