    HID bulb question

I have heard two different answers about the running temps on an HID bulb. I have heard that they physicly run hotter than a halogen and also that they are coolre than the halogen because they use less wattage. So, are the HID bulbs hotter or colder than halogen?

    Thanks.

Inside the gas capsule they run very hot, nearly 800 degrees. Its a requirement to get the pressure high enough to keep the spark going.

The trick is there is an outer quartz bulb and between the 2 is an almost perfect vacuum. Therefore heat transmission is minimal and most of it ends up being used up as other forms of radiation blocked by the quartz. Therefore the housing doesnt get terribly hot.

My glass lenses are noticably cooler to the touch with the HID than they ever were with halogens.
    Im now E30less.

          thats strange...

i say this b/c i had some OEM DS2 HID's from a MBZ, which i ghetto rigged into my old US ellips, well needless to say, they came loose from their housing, and cut through my ellipsoid reflector like a lightsaber, and then caught on fire.
