do HID ballasts get very hot?

HID newbie question here. I wasn't sure if HID ballasts get very hot and would a good place for mounting be the back of the headlight covers or brackets which are plastic. Did a quick search but didn't really answer my question.

Might work, but would be kind of a pita and they would rattle around a lot which isn't very good. I mounted mine underneath the sheet metal tray that is below the headlights, this way they are protected by the valance and no water/dirt etc. will get up there if you have the fenderliners/splash guards installed.

no they dont get hot at all. dont do something silly like wrap them up in a plastic bag or something like that. mine just sit right under the low beams on the metal trays.
