How to wire foglights as daytime running lights?

I need to have daytime running lights setup on my e30 in order to pass inspections in Canada.

I searched but no information on how to wire the foglights to temporarily act as DRLs

Does anyone know how to wire the foglight switch so the fogs turn on when the engine is running?

    TIA for any info.

You could always get Euro ellipsoids and use the city lights as DRLs.

Well I was hoping to avoid buying another set of headlights as I only need this done to pass inspections and then I would remove it.

I was hoping to find a way to activate the fogs or the mains to be on all the time when the car is running and then remove it after I get my inspection paperwork.

put switch in position 2 (headlights on). remove the switch panel and tuck it behind the knee bolster. put another black plastic panel in its place with a dummy switch. that way when they turn the car on your headlights will go on and they will be none the wiser. will cost a couple bucks for some plastic and a couple for a dummy switch. dummy switch doesnt have to do anything since cars that have the main headlights running all the time, the switch only allows you to turn on other lights (fogs, brights, etc)

cheap, and will take 5 mins to return to normal.

Tell those buggers that told you you need daytime running lights on your e30 to go piss up a rope. The e30 never came with daytime running lights in any market so it is NOT required here. My M3 is a california car and it doesn't have daytime running lights, and I probably live 10 minutes from you. (The Northshore is not that big.)

Why are they making you put day time running lights on your car to pass inspection. When the car never had any in the first place. Almost sounds like they want to rape you for more money...

my thoughts too, but unless he heard wrong, i wouldnt suggest he try and argue the point with motor vehicle inspectors. they tend to not be very nice.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm told I have citylights in my headlights so I'll see how hard it is to wire them up first.

I'd love to tell them off but I need to pass the 'Federal Inspection' and get the Form 2 stamped or I can't get plates for the car. Where on the North Shore are you at? I'm in Lynn Valley.

It is some regulation that is put in place for every imported car to meet 'Canadian Safety Requirements'. It's a stupid cash grab as I'm sure everyone takes the stupid DRL module out after they pass.

It's a load of crap saying you need daytime running lights. There is no law stating that a car manufactured without daytime running lights has to have them to pass any inspection. You can run an older car without seatbelts if it was manufactured without them. :hitler: If this were the case everyone would have to keep upgrading their cars to newer standards.

DRLs is not the only thing... if you import a car into Canada it has to be brought up to Transport Canada requirements.

So that means a metric scale on the speedometer, proper bumpers, etc and that all has to be done and inspected before you can register the car.

                      Yes... pretty stupid.

Thats a load of crap. Ask to speak to a different inspector.. My car is a US spec california first registered 1988 M3. It has no daytime running lights, and still has the us spec cluster as well. Nothing was required to change to import the car. The law requires the car to have daytime running lights only if the car was produced in the canadian market, with daytime running lights, the same year as your car. What year is your car? AFAIK the E30 was never produced with daytime running lights anywhere.

I imported my car from Japan(320i) and I had to add a 3rd brake light and DRL's in order for it to pass inspection. But I was talking with my local tech and he said that any car produced before 92' without DRL's isn't required so I don't really know

When you import a car rules change, kinda like how you need sidemarkers if you import a car to the US from Europe.

But I don't know the specific laws, so I won't make claims about the DRLs thing, it does seems stupid though...But I also think that law is stupid.

I forgot to post the followup... I take the car as is to Canadian Tire for the Provincial inspection and it passes without any required upgrades.

So when the car is required to upgrade to have the DRL I have no idea.
