The second substantial modification I have made to my new (to me) 1990 325ic (first was full tune up, timing belt, headgasket, guibo along with Bilsteins, H&R Sports, new E36 HD control arms and tie rods) was to install a set of used smileys with the DDM 5k 35w HID kit (both low and high beam...more on that to follow). The install was a snap and everything worked perfectly.
My first try with the lights on Day 1 did not impress as much as I had hoped, I was not very impressed with the light output. On the following day I followed the daniel stern instructions to properly aim the lamps (both low and high beams) which was simple and quick also.
Along came night, and wow. The cutoff is razor sharp and output is great. I have not been flashed by another car yet, so I believe that they are a-ok for the street. If you like the low beams, you will love the high beams. The road becomes lit up light a pro-rally night stage!
I live in a rural area and stints of 2-5 minute uninterrupted high beam use is relatively common. If you have to flip them off constantly, this might not be right as they do take 20 seconds to really warm up. Of note however, once warmed up, when you flip them off and then back on a few seconds later, they don't need a full warm-up any longer.
I also wired up the city lights, they look a bit yellow when the HID's are on. They do work well though, and they look great when run alone.
This is one of the nicest upgrades I have done to any of my cars recently.
