    The perfect aftermarket HU, but only one problem...

    It doesn't exist.

    Wouldn't it be awesome if BMW licensed Alpine or some other company to make reproduction HU's that looked like the stock one, but had the options of an aftermarket HU

    I would have loved to keep my stock deck, but I finally caved last year and bought a HU that plays MP3's from a CD, from a USB thumb drive, from an iPhone/iPod/Sansa player, etc.. and has much better sound, more options and expandability.

    You would think with all the E30's and other similar era BMW's still out there that used the same HU that there would be a market for that instead of having owners buy an aftermarket HU and rewire their car, which is a hassle and if you have someone else do it can be a bit expensive.

    Instead, make a plug and play harness to bypass the factory Premium sound amp and build a HU that looks factory but plays MP3's, is USB, AUX, iPod/iPhone/MP3 player compatible, Sat radio compatible, has RCA outputs, etc... and make it plug and play as well.

    It wouldn't even have to play CD's as thumb drives are inexpensive and common and everyone has an iPod/iPhone or other type of media player that uses USB or could be used with an AUX in port.

    Or omit the CD player from the HU and make an optional plug and play CD player that plays MP3's as an add-on to the aftermarket HU that installs in the glove box or other location as one CD holds about 150 songs, or even a CD changer that is MP3 compatible.

    How awesome would that be?

    I would easily pay $300.00 or more for a HU that looks stock but has the features of an aftermarket HU

    Instead, that money from all those BMW owners is going to other HU manufacturers and to car audio shops to rewire their cars.

    Is the market not big enough to R&D this?

    Some of the aftermarket parts sellers for older Corvettes do this - they have OEM looking HU's, but they also play CD's and have updated features and they also make speakers that look stock on the outside but are updated on the inside.

    They sell them for around $300-$500 last time I looked.
    I haven't owned a Corvette for about 7 years or so and I'm a bit out of the loop, but there is a market for them or at least there is in the Corvette community and BMW made more E30s then GM did Corvettes.

    Add in E28's and other similar era BMW's that use the same type of HU and you've got a large untapped market.

    You would think maybe BavAuto or someone would see the potential, especially with our cars as they use a common ground and it takes some effort to replace the HU due to the rewiring issue and the factory amp.

    Also, maybe offer an aftermarket plug and play wiring kit with better wires as ours are old and thin and might not be able to handle higher wattage.

    Make some aftermarket speakers as well.

    Why not offer an option to the 20 year old stock HU with the scratchy volume knob that eats tapes?

    How much would you pay for a stock looking HU loaded with modern features that is plug and play?

    Here's an example of an Aftermarket HU for Corvette's.

    They sell for about $300:

    Corvette USA-6 AM/FM Stereo, Concours Series, Custom Autosound, Chrome Face, 1963-1967
    • 240 Watts Of Power (60 x 4)
    • Fits Dash Without Modifications
    • New Electronic Tuning & Volume Controls
    • Separate Bass & Treble
    • 15FM/10AM Presets
    • 4 Channel RCA Pre-outs
    • Seek Tuning: Allows Easy Pickup Of Strong Stations
    • 4-Way Speaker Fader
    • Power Antenna Lead
    • Auxiliary Input For iPod, MPS, Satellite Radio etc.
    • No Cassette
    • CD Track Disc/Scan/Repeat/Random Play (CD Changer Optional (P/N 34976)

    Here's another:

    Corvette AM/FM/iPod Stereo Radio, Manual Turning, 1968-1976

    * 200 Watts Of Power
    * 5AM/15FM Presets
    * Auto Reverse
    * Fast Forward-Rewind Buttons
    * Preset Scan
    * Seek
    * 4-Way Fader
    * Separate Bass/Treble
    * Green Backlit
    * Longer Push-Buttons

    BavAuto or someone needs to make something similar for our cars. Period correct looks, but with updated features.

      The short version is, there isn't enough of a market *willing to actually pay*. The problem is twofold: when the cars aren't 'mainstream vintage' yet, there is no market of willing purchasers. When they BECOME mainstream vintage, everyone looks for the original parts. I saw the options for corvettes and they look very nice - and a great idea - but there you have it.

        Those "Corvette" decks are absolute shit.

        They are a $79.95 special pile of crap "converted" by $9/hr kids to fit the dash...no one gives a rats ass if they WORK or sound good, but they are absolute shit.

        AND they sell for astronomical prices, especially when about 70% of them don't work straight out of the box.

        Absolute junk. Overpriced absolute junk.

        No respectable manufacturer has made a "shaft mount" deck in 15 years.

        As far as BMW making a deck that is plug and play with modern features...WTF, Man, NEW BMWs don't have modern features! USB, Bluetooth, Subwoofer (level controls too?) all of which base model Civics have (AFAIK, I still hate new cars) Thank God Bangle wanted steering wheel controls, or the damn things would just now be happening!

        If "classic" looks and modern performance is your goal, you can always use a CD33/43 and an AUX input/iPod controller, a C33 can do all the iPod shit too. They can be plug and play with a harness from BMW...or use a bit of effort and go aftermarket on the amplifiers and speakers.

        None of this shit is hard, none of this shit is breaking new ground. The toughest thing about a Business Class install in an E30 is modding the bezel, which is not at all necessary, but certainly looks much better.

          ^ just bought a cd43, cant wait to install it, but what is this about modifying the bezel? I bought my car with a cheap bling bling deck so I have no idea if all my mounting hardware still exists.

            A CD43 does not fit "flush" like the stock E30 decks do.

            They stick out about 6mm. They look pretty nice, adequate fro most guys....but...if you are a finicky bitch like me, you have to remove the bezel, cut off the rear of the deck mount and extend it a bit so the deck fits flush.

            The texture of the finish is still off a bit, but that is hard to notice at all.

              awesome, thank you. I was also wondering how hard would it be to install premium sound in a non premium sound car? im a bit of an audio noob, but I know I wont need the amp since I have the cd43 but how about the rest of the equipment?

                I only posted those as examples to show that they do exist so it's a mystery why someone doesn't step up and make them for our cars but with better quality/features?

                Not enough of a market? There were Millions of e30's and e28's and other BMW's made that use the same setup our cars do.

                It would be nice to have an aftermarket HU that has the stock face but has some features behind it and is plug and play.

                I guess not enough of a market for it to happen.
