    Speaker Distortion

My Type-R comps are distorting at really high volume running of the deck (CDA-9831). Is this because the deck signal is becoming distorted, or because the speakers can't handle the volume? I would think that its the deck signal because it only has 18W RMS and the Type R's take 50W RMS. A friend of mine says its the speakers. What do you guys think?

FYI, the HPF is set to 160hz and the crossovers are at -6db.

You and your friend both know nothing about audio...

Buy a good 4 channel amp, and have that run your interior speakers. In deck amps produce low power, and suck ass in general.

Stop playing your speakers into distortion, it can and will cause damage to them.

      I am going to agree.

Underpowering speakers causes 90% of speakers blowing as the signal is distorted due to THD. Power them sperately if you have a shitball headunit.

You are driving the deck too hard, which makes it put out a clipped signal.

Sending 15watts of a clipped signal is far worse than alot of clean power... Get an amp.

If your deck is only 15w (rms) and it clips to all hell (lots of distortion) the speakers will be ok...just sound like shit. Although... if you have 40w and it distorts that bad, then you may have a problem. Just dont play the speakers so loud that it distorts. If you get an amp that puts between 50-80w to each speaker (rms... not peak) then they will be noticably louder and cleaner. They will play with a lot less distortion then off the deck. Deck power sucks balls IMO.

Axxe, do you understand what is meant when people say that the deck is "clipping"?
I would be happy to explain, but do not wish to type for the hell of it if you already understand.

And yeah, everyone is right when they tell you that it is the deck producing a distorted signal.

Yes luke. I know exactly what clipping means, it's just I didn't know the term for it. I didn't use the proper terminoligy so every one started riding my ass about it. Thanks for helping anyway :P .

Anyone know of a good 4-channel amp that doesn't cost more than $300 USD? That has at least 50W rms?

I got one. It works for me. 4 x 85W RMS, $200. Read the dimensions, it's kinda big.

                      JL Audio 300/4
should run 350 or possibly a little lower. if not, haggle. i wouldn't pay more than a dollar a watt for an amplifier.

it looks like the e class is an OK amp, too, around 230 bucks.

If you're talking about RMS wattage @ 4 ohms, you'll be hard pressed to find a decent amp for a dollar per watt, hell probably even two dollars per watt.

woops, they rated it for 2 ohm stereo loads. well, they'll still give you at least 45 RMS per channel @ 4 ohm (dunno how underrated JL is, though).
