    Odometer gears done broke???

    Greetings all,

Over the last few days, my odometer and tripometer have been very sporadic. At one point last week, the tripometer seemed to be counting every mile (and not every tenth of a mile.)

e.g. I would travel 60 miles and the 6 would be in the ones place and the 0 would be in the tenths place.

It seemed pretty bizarre, I was just wondering if this is a popular occurence with odometer gears that are getting ready to crap out. A friend and I narrowed it down that it seemed to be at least one broken solder, that was before, now it seems that I better go ahead and swap in the gears.

My main question was if this counting of every mile with the tripometer is symptomatic of aging gears or if this is another issue related to a broken solder (or solders.)

    Thanks for any comments/suggestions.

Yep, happened to me when the gear was getting caught and not spinning freely. I guess it could potentially be a problem with it not getting a signal all the time as well. In fact, I believe I had that problem as well when the sensor on the diff had a bad connection, it would count miles every once in a while.

I would check the electrical connections and then the gears, and cold solder joints on the main board. Easy stuff first.

Mine broke last week. I would just leave it broken, because i don't plan on selling it, but I need to know when my next oil change is. :)

Anyone have any more information on this? Now the situation has turned from odd to irritating, now it is counting the miles much too fast (e.g. I pull out of the driveway and it claims I have done an entire mile.) I'm going to replace the speedometer unit and I'm also going to replace the SI board, if that doesn't fix the problem is there any chance this could be a diff sensor issue?

            Help is much appreciated.

                  Been there, bought that.

It's definitely not the odo gears, but I figure while I'm in there I'll knock those out too. If it isn't the SI board or the speedo unit itself then I am confused as to what's causing the problem.

Luke? Any input on this subject?
