What does it sound like when you overdrive tweeters? I have stock premium sound run by a 40W RMS amp. Sometimes the tweeters sound very "piercing" at higher volumes.

They sound like one of those pos cars driving around with windows down blasting music with blown speakers.....Mtech1 v8 build thread - https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/sho...d.php?t=413205

You are probably over driving them.... if they sound piercing to your ears then turn the sound down? OR get higher quality tweeters.
Another possiblity is your amp is driven into clipping and you are hearing that through your speakers...Mtech1 v8 build thread - https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/sho...d.php?t=413205

I only have the gain up on the amp a little less than half way...can an amp still go into clipping when the gain is down?
I realize I can turn the treble down but I have it set where it sounds good at moderate volume..then when the volume goes up the tweeters tend to drown out the other speakers....

Hmmm, very interesting. Thanks. I tuned my system in a totally different way that I read somewhere else online..basically I turned the gains all the way down then put the headunit to 3/4 power..then I slowly turned up the gains until distortion...except it got so f'ing loud without distorting that I thought there was not way I would ever listen to it that loud and called it good for the front..a little less half way..then I adjusted the rears to balance out with the front..even lower gain..finally did the sub..again about 1/2 on the gain..
Me thinks I will fiddle with it some more.........

yeah, turn the gain down a bit if you got it to a point when it started to distort.
also, most typical head units (not counting the really good ones w/o built in amps) do not give a clean sound when the volume is maxed out....Mtech1 v8 build thread - https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/sho...d.php?t=413205

Or what I used to do, replace the electrolytic high pass capacitor of the same value but poly or higher :) I am not talking about a Theta caps or anything but even a simple Dayton or Solen cap is much better. Of course if the tweeter is junk, it won't fix it.Mtech1 v8 build thread - https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/sho...d.php?t=413205

WAY too techie for this joint.
I modded the wifeys' stock PS crossovers, but did 12db/oct and a Mylar bypass cap (.01Mfd) using the stock coil and cap, let the mid run full range.
You should hear that shit...fucking amazing!

Lol, I just ordered a couple boards to build myself a pre-amp for my dual mono :) 1% resistors all the way through and hi quality caps.Mtech1 v8 build thread - https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/sho...d.php?t=413205

Thanks for the inputs..I turned the gain UP on my amps and lowered the listening volume as well as made the high pass fq lower 50hz instead of the 80hz I was using..I think it sounds better now...might have to give it a few days to reveal its flaws then I may be out for another solution again..
Advice always appreciated!!!!
