Convert Premium to iPod only - help please

Ok, I'm looking for some help/validation from the community here on what I think I have learned reading lots of posts on the subject.

I have an 88 325is with premium sound (amp in the trunk near where the antenna used to be). My stock cassette deck head unit took a dump and is now worthless. I've been happy with the sound quality of the system and all I really need is a way to run my iPod through the system, no CD or radio needed. This is a part-time DD and track car so nothing fancy is required or desired.

I would like to free up the DIN slot the head unit is currently taking and mount gauges in there. I'm thinking of installing an aftermarket amp under the passenger seat and running the iPod directly into that.

My understanding is that since I have the factory amp this isn't so simple as just tapping into the speaker wires in my dash. Is my best bet to bypass the stock amp and use existing wiring, or to just run new wire to the existing speakers? (I know this has been debated many times before but my searches aren't coming up with any definitive/clear answer, sorry if it's already out here.)

Second question is: any recommendations on a cheap amp to suit my needs?

    Thanks in advance.

First off, running the i-pod directly to the amp will work, but sound quality will be lacking because you have no real equalizer to adjust. You also won't have a volume knob and will have to use the iPod to control volume (which is a pain). However, getting an external equalizer will solve that. Take a look at AudioControl's stuff.

As far as running new wire or using the stock stuff, it's up to you. I find running new wire is just easier and cleaner then messing with the factory stuff, but that's just my opinion.
