Not really anything out there that is the "win all" for E30's. Best would be a nakamichi or a CD34, but those cost $$.
I decided to ditch the looks department, and go for color and function. I ended up with the Clarion DXZ735usb. It has all the functions you can ask for, works and sounds great. RGB adjustable screen, X-overs, frequency adjustments. It has a bunch of features for around $130.-tim

The only thing that Clarion lacks is the #1 most important thing in sound quality, which is High Pass filters.
Clarion also has the most annoying "feature" I know of, which is when you eject a CD, the FM comes on. I fucking HATE that, and no Clarion I know of is immune.
If only Blaupunkt was not shitty, if only Pioneer would make a deck that isn't BLOOOOOOO, if only Kenwood didn't have shitty controls, blah blah blah.
I want a goddamn Denon Z1. Wish I had money when there was one for sale.

Not so stylish is it. Just function.

The Clarion HU actually matches the E30 Dash quite nicely with the Black face, white lettering that illuminates Amber and Amber display. (Or whatever color you want)
Oh yeah, it also sounds great and has a ton of features.
Try finding a HU with the features as the Clarion HU for anywhere near the same price, such as 6v pre-outs, active crossovers, digital time alignment, variable color display, etc...
I spent months looking for an aftermarket HU with a color scheme that would come close to matching the E30 dash with decent features and this is the closest thing available without spending a ton of money.

I love my red Alpine IDA-X300 (new version is the ida-x303)
I'm not interested in a cd player anymore so it worked perfectly for me. I have direct Ipod connection and controls through the deck, I'm running a 250GB HDD through USB Audio. Functionality is good, High Pass, Low Pass, etc, etc. No EQ on deck, it's expandable for Crossovers and EQ though. I really like the look, I've gotten used to the big ass dial in the middle and it looks great at night!
I'm running a complete Alpine Type R system (although going to get a new sub eventually) 5.25" comp front, 6.5" comp rear, 10" Sub (300w RMS), 500w Amp. Overall I'm really happy with the entire system.

I just picked up a Jensen Heavy Duty 3510 HU from Crutchfield. Adjusable amber lights, buttons match closely to BMW OBC buttons. Has hookups for IPod, Sirius, and aux inputs. PLUS it has NOAA Weatherband just like the old stock BMW cassette units. The faceplate is all black and it looks really close to stock.
Installed
1993 Alpine White II 325i convertible (last year of E30 production)
1988 Zinnoberot 325 Super ETA coupe
