Buying a head unit

Alright, so I finally got an E30 and I am in need of a CD player. I'm leaning towards the Alpine-7998 right now. It has a nice flip down motorized face plate and is supposed to be very high quality. The only problem I have heard is that you NEED an amp, anyone know if it is true?

I would like to get an alpine, what are some other good Alpine units?

alpine has a number of good units, just have the find one with the features you want. www.carmedia1.com has good prices, and of course ebay always has deals.

Make sure you get a unit with amber or red illumination, i hate non-matching lights, its annoying at night.

not sure about weather or not you need an amp for that model... but there is a good chance that you do.... you need to find a deck that is self amplified... most likley it will bragg on the face plate that it is 60w to 4 channels.... but in all reality it is about 5 watts to 4 channels..... max output/RMS output
