Gague cluster goes crazy.

Hello and I am a newbie.

Did the search and got info on them not working at all, but my water temp and oil pressure gauges go full high key on ignition on, and they never move from there.

Previous owner said he replaced the battery in the cluster. Battery?!?!?! All right... sure.

Plus the thing runs dead rich all the time.

So I want to run this thing and see what the heck else it needs, but I'd rather be able to see what the engine is doing while I am doing it.

What is this oil pressure gauge you speak of?

But if we aare talking about the standard cluster, Yes, there is a battery in there (on early models).
If it isn't the battery messing with your gauges, it is probably either a bad connection, a ground, or a bad SI board. The best thing to do is to pull the cluster and have a look-see around in there to make sure nothing is burnt or melted. If it isn't, carefully put it back together taking care with the connections. If it is screwed then you need a new SI board or a whole new cluster.
It may be worth it to find a known-good cluster and just swap it in there. If this doesn't fix the problems it is time to dig deeper...
