Car Phone

I have a oem car phone with the base and phone with all the wires intact. At first I was going to sell it but since it isn't selling, I thought I'd tackle a project from an idea I saw here about swapping the internals of a prepaid. To start I don't think it'll work, the circuit board wouldn't match up and I don't have a experience with expanding circuit boards to make the buttons line up, etc, etc.
Does anyone have any experience with having a functional car phone in the 21st century? Specifically with the digital networks, ideally gsm

The easiest way would be to make a headset out of the old car phone, then just plug it into a prepaid phone hidden somewhere. Similar to this:

THat was pretty much the idea I had, but I am worried about getting the buttons to work...
