    Amp advice

I got two set of the PPI 355cs.
    They're rated at 50 RMS and 100 Max @ 4OHM...their manual says 150max....
I am looking at 2 different PPI amps,
one is 600W and rated at 50 RMS x4 @ 4 Ohms and the other amp is 1200w and is rated 110 RMS @ 4 ohms...

    my question is,
is it better to drive a smaller amp harder, or drive a larger amp easier...

I know some amps require so much power just to sound right...

FWIW, I am planning on using an Audio Control LC6 too...

the larger amp has a remote bass adjustment but I think you can get something simular for the LC6 as well...

Just been awhile since I designed a stereo system for my car, I really don't need the bump, bump just a decent amount of base...

This is going into e30 cab incase you're wondering...

plans for a sub later when a good box is available...

    Thanks for any help...

In general, SS amps do not care how hard they are run & have a rather flat response no matter how hard they are driven (until clipping point is reached). Tube-powered amps are what give up the goods when cranked (harmonics from clipping is what makes them sound good). With that in mind, I have always favored going with "too much" amplifier and backing the gain off to match the speaker. That way your amp is never stressed or sweating when you are cranking it. On the other hand, it can be argued that buying too much amplifier & not using it is just a waste of money & space.

I understand that these PPIs really like power & only come into their own when fed 75w or so. Just make sure that those 75w are clean.

I'm powering these with an A/D/S PQ40.2 @ 100wpc with the highpass x-over at 108hz (12dbl slope). If you are considering running these as low as the factory x-overs will go (87hz i believe) I would suggest giving them at the very least 100w.

I like to stick with a bigger amp and just adjust the power down. This way you are never working the amp so it doesn't heat up, therefor making them last a good long time.

I did 2 pair last week off of an Alpine 35X4, with a puny 120W of Pioneer on a Infinity 1030W in (surprise!) one of my 10" ported boxes.

Car sounded excellent, plenty of loud, plenty of headroom.

          highpass about 100hz @ 12db/oct, lowpass about 80Hz.

Remember: 100Hz @ 12db/oct gives you about 4db headroom, watt for watt. What that means is this guys high-passed 35W basically is about the same as 120W full range, only with less IM distortion.

You don't need a ton of power with those speakers. 50 watts RMS/channel is plenty, even full range.
