i see... i was planning on getting another amp... maybe i will now for the sub only and leave the xtant for spakers...

so in the future should i look for an amp thast 1ohm stable? what im asking is that is this a good feature to have. i would assume i need 300-360+ watts for this sub to start sounding right/good.

also my voice coils arent wired in a series so ill have to do that tomarow and bridge it to see what difference it makes.

thanks for all the help, i can sleep tonight with more comfort now that i have a fairly good understanding of why i was getting the results i was getting.

oh, and i still dont kwo if high gains is bad for a speaker/sub or amp?

I'd just sell the xtant all together. Get a 2 channel amp for your front speakers and ditch the rears. Then get a dedicated sub amp. If you can find a 1ohm stable amp for a good price, I'd get one. You'll need to use large power cable to an amp, and possibly have to get some cooling fans if you're going to run an amp at 1ohm due to the high amounts of current. I'd recommend checking out US Amps or MMATS for a sub amp.

DEFINITELY wire the voice coils on the sub in series. If they're in parallel you're going to damage your amp.

When you really crank the gains, you introduce increase the total harmonic distortion values... but with the sub it probably won't matter a great deal.

The Xtant will do just fine. Check your sub again. I'm pretty sure it's a dual 4 Ohm voice coil, so it's net impedance is 2 Ohms with the coils paralled.
If you don't know how to wire them in series or parallel, take it to a shop before you blow something up, you really don't know what you're doing.
Is the sub in a proper box?? (ie. the volume and loading it's designed for?) This can also drastically affect sub volume
At 2 Ohms the amp will do about 200 watts into the sub channel, which should be good.
Did you adjust the gain POT for the sub channel, or just the 0, +10, +20 jumpers?? You have to do this too. If your deck is the regular 2V RCA output, you'll have to adjust this fairly high. Better decks have 4 or even 6V out, so you don't have to crank the amp gains as much, which generally results in a lower noise floor.
the Xtant is good, don't throw it out just because you don't know how to hook it up. Save the front channels for the front speakers!!

I set him straight via PM conversation.

He's going to bridge channels 3 and 4 to the Crystal 8" - 300 rms and then 1 and 2 to some fronts.

the amp is a dual 4ohm voice coil.. i will be wiring them in parrallel in the coming days. yes its in a proffesionally made box, baught it sealed and ready to go. not sure what you mean by "POT" but the input gain jumper is set to +20 db now and the gain knobs is at around 10 o clock. (6 o clock being where it starts and ends). yea i wont be throwing it away as after wiring it to parrallel it should be better, im learning how to make better use out of this amp by each passing day while talking to people about it. im not sure about my rca output volts... its an alpine 9833, i guess it doesnt matter since thats something i cant change.. would be nice to know though, ill check whenever i remember to check.

i did however get a drastic loss in bass after reinstalling the rear seat back section... i have my ski hole popped out but my seat doesnt have the hole in it so it basically just muffles all the bass. should i cut out the foam in the shape of the ski hole? and just leave it how it is and tell peopel not to put wait on the leather there since there will be no foam... or should i just go to a junkyard and pick one of that has the collapsable ski hole access? maybe i could cut out the foam and cut the leather and fold it back myself... although thats more work then either of the two previous options and might not look so good.

Sorry, I forgot that you were getting the ID and running the voice coils in series on it.
