I decided to remove the JVC head unit that was in my 1986 325es and install the original head unit (CM 5807). I bought one off of eBay that is in great shape. I really like the look of the factory head unit, so my mind is made up on this. The car has the fader unit, but it is not connected. It did not have the premium sound system. It appears the previous owner had the wiring redone, so the speaker cable went from the four speakers directly to the JVC head unit. There is no amplifier that I can see (I looked in the trunk by the power antenna).
I am a newbie with this, but I did lots of research and worked on this last weekend. I hooked up all the wires and everything is pretty much working. It sounds good and it looks great. However, I have the nagging feeling that I did something wrong. Contributing to this feeling is that fact that whenever I adjust the volume, I get a lot of static / feedback. Once I settle on a volume level, everything sounds good. So here are my questions:
1. How should I have handled downgrading to the two-channel head unit having separate wires for all four speakers? I crimped together the left front positive with the rear front positive, left front negative with rear front negative, then ran the resulting two wires to the left channel hookup on the head unit (with the proper OEM plug). I did the same thing for the right speakers. I did not solder. I used a butt connector with shrink tube.
2. Is there anything else I might have overlooked that would be a glaring mistake? Pretty much I took the instructions from the JVC, figured out what each of the wires did in its harness, then translated those wires to the equivalent OEM wires left in the car.
Thanks for any help you may provide.
